Performance

Boxer, Rear-Wheel Drive, Zenith – BRZ

Subaru’s new sportscar was built first and foremost with the engine in mind. The engineers placed the engine as low and far back as they could, and then developed the rest of the design around that, according to Michael McHale of Subaru Corporate Communications as reported in Autoblog.com.

This was a conscious design choice to place handling as the top priority for the BRZ. In fact, the BRZ’s center of gravity is lower than the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Porsche Cayman, the Mazda Miata and the BMW M3.

Subaru also wanted to keep the 2013 BRZ light on its feet, coming in at just 2,689 lbs, or 100 lbs lighter than the Civic SI and 600 lbs lighter than both the Ford Mustang and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Packs a Punch

Subaru introduces the all-new FA engine design with the BRZ, and it features some interesting developments:

• Active Valve Control System (AVCS)
• 200 horsepower & 150 pound-feet of torque
• Estimated 30 MPG on the highway
• Engine is located 120mm lower and 240mm further back than the Impreza’s engine

So how is the BRZ likely to do in Massachusetts? Tricky roads aren’t likely to slow the BRZ down much. Autoblog.com had a chance to test drive the 2013 BRZ, and the reviewers came away impressed.

They were quick to praise the “stiffness of the BRZ’s body and low center of gravity” which allowed the suspension to focus on gripping the road without killing the ride quality. Cornering was also a breeze for the reviewers – even at high speeds, they were totally at ease.

When the BRZ arrives in March, the car is set to include navigation, a 6.1″ display, a 196-watt stereo with USB and Bluetooth, as well as heated mirrors. Price has yet to be determined, but everything from $22,000 to $28,000 have been reported.

Bigger & Better

The 2013 Subaru XV looks and feels a lot like the flagship of the Subaru fleet: the new Impreza. In fact, Autoblog.com recently took a trip out to Italy to take the XV for a test drive, and reported that the “first thing to hit [them]” was “deja vu…this is the 2012 Impreza hatchback.”

But rather than being a detriment, the similarity to the Impreza is actually a strength of the XV – how many crossover SUVs can actually deliver handling like the world-famous Impreza? Once the XV arrives, it’ll be the only one.

Add to the Impreza’s impressive handling the extra ground clearance that you get in the XV, and you’re looking at a seriously versatile vehicle. This crossover is raised 8.6 inches off the ground compared to the Impreza hatchback, and includes wheel wells and suspension specially designed to accomodate snow drifts, flooded streets and off-roading. For tricky New England winters, the XV looks like the perfect antidote.

Performance

Right now, Subaru has only committed to bringing a single engine choice for the XV to American shores: a 2.0L flat-4 with 148 horsepower. Paired with a 6-speed CVT, the 2013 XV is rated at 25 MPG city and 34 MPG highway. Drivers will also get Subaru’s cutting-edge Lineartronic paddle shifters.

Driving the XV

So how does the XV Crosstrek drive? Autoblog.com was singing its praises, saying that with the vehicle’s “boxer engine and symmetrical AWD, the XV has a well-balanced and comfortable feel,” and electrically assisted steering that was “light but communicative.”

While final pricing has yet to be announced, Autoblog.com reports that Subaru right now is considering a price tag under $19,000. As far as crossovers go, it’s going to be tough to beat that price point.

2012 Subaru XV

The 2012 Subaru XV crossover recently debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, and it’s already turning heads and getting American Subaru enthusiasts excited.

In terms of specs, the XV takes its cues from the Impreza, but features a ground clearance raised by 8.6 inches just in case you want to take this mean machine away from the roads. Drivers will get to choose between 3 engines: 2 gasoline engines at 1.6L and 2.0L, plus a modified diesel Boxer 4-cylinder engine. Combined with Subaru’s advanced Lineartronic CVT, fuel economy is said to be exceptional, but firm numbers haven’t been released.

Other features for the XV that Subaru has announced include a large Multi-Function Display in the instrument panel, class-leading forward visibility, airbags for front, side, curtain and driver’s knee, plus Vehicle Dynamic Control.

While there’s no official word yet on whether the 2012 XV will make it to Boston or to North America at all, Autoblog.com has reported that Subaru is considering it.

2013 Subaru BRZ

The second major Subaru debut in Frankfurt is more of a show-stopper: the rear-wheel drive BRZ coupe.

Although it will only be a “near-production-ready” version of the BRZ according to InsideLine.com, the final trim should be ready by the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show in December with production expected to begin in spring 2012.

BRZ apparently stands for “Boxer Engine,” “Rear-Wheel Drive,” and “Zenith,” which sums up this new car pretty well. First, the BRZ features Subaru’s brand new 2.0L, direct-injection 4-cylinder Boxer engine that Car and Driver reports will have 200 horsepower.

The rear-wheel drive part of its name is self-explanatory, but arguably the most surprising element, since Subaru is synonymous with road-hugging all-wheel drive vehicles. Other performance details are hard to come by, but the transmissions will be a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual.

The BRZ has in the past been dubbed the “Toyobaru,” since the car is a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. In an interesting post, Autoblog.com mentions that both Subaru and Toyota were focused on rear-wheel drive from the beginning, and that Subaru is keen “to show off just how far [their] engineers can push handling and traction levels regardless of which wheels drive the car.”

MSRP

The 2012 Impreza’s MSRP was released just a couple of weeks ago, and it’s coming in at a pretty nice number.

The base model 4-door Impreza with a manual transmission starts at just $17,495. Add Subaru’s newly designed CVT automatic and the price only rises to $18,495. The 5-door Impreza starts at $17,995 for the manual and $18,995 for the automatic.

Keep in mind that these prices do not include the $750 destination charge and other extras. But if you shop at Cityside Subaru or North End Subaru, your price is still going to be the lowest around.

Trim Levels, Price Points & Specs

So what does the trim-level lineup look like for the 2012 Impreza? Boston drivers can look forward to a range of choices beyond the base 2.0i, all of them affordable:

• 2.0i Premium – $18,795 for 4-door, $19,295 for 5-door
• 2.0i Sport Premium – $20,295 (5-door only)
• 2.0i Limited – $21,595 for 4-door, $22,095 for 5-door

A new Sport Limited trim will also be available for the 2012 Impreza, but Subaru hasn’t yet released its MSRP.
